The Canadian Alliance of Dance Artists – East Chapter (CADA/East) is a professional association by and for dance artists. We work to educate and empower our membership of independent dancers, providing the tools necessary for successful and sustainable career management, while encouraging a commitment to best practices within an evolving sector. Formed in 1986 responding to federal Status of the Artist legislation, and incorporated in Ontario in 1995 to improve the standing of dance artists, CADA/East (formerly CADA-ON) has always responded directly to the needs of our communities. 

Our specialized interest is in the status of the independent dance artist. The CADA/East model reflects a diverse and flexible dance field in which an artist’s roles are fluid, including conventional employment, as well as alternatives to the traditional labour/management model. We address the needs of a community in which the vast majority of artists are self-employed.

We are a grassroots arts service organization that operates without full time staff. We are not a union or regulatory body, working instead with flexibility and responsiveness to support our membership of independent dancers and empower them toward self-representation.

CADA/East is seeking a part time Administrative Director. Reporting directly to, and working in tandem with, the Board of Directors, the successful candidate will be responsible for planning, developing, and implementing the organization’s programs, operations, and administrative strategies.


General Management

Expand and uphold the organization’s relevance and service to the Canadian dance sector.

    • Research/implement new member benefits and services.
    • Support the Board of Directors with new initiatives and services, assist the Board with member outreach activities.
    • Management of part-time Membership Coordinator (MC).
    • Maintain and report on relationships with partner organisations including PASO Coalition, the Dancer Transition Resource Centre (DTRC) (including on the MOVE Steering Committee participation), the Canadian Dance Assembly (CDA) and Dance Umbrella of Ontario (DUO).

Grant Management

Secure ongoing funding for the organization’s operations, growth, and stability.

    • Preparation of multi-year reports and operating grants for Toronto Arts Council, Ontario Arts Council, and Canada Council for the Arts.
    • Ongoing communication with relevant arts council program officers.


Deliver programming that effectively supports the economic well-being and professional development of independent dance artists, while fostering a more sustainable and equitable dance ecology.

    • Plan and implement Community Learning Series (CLS) events; engage facilitators, coordinate with venues, organize promotion, accessibility arrangements, and refreshments.
    • Oversee administration of Training Subsidy Program (TSP).
    • Oversee ongoing research and updates for the Professional Standards for Dance (PSD). Coordinate the circulation of the PSD, and expand its visibility.
    • Administer partnership with Canada’s National Ballet School.


Establish sustainable sources of revenue which can supplement grant funding and membership fees.

    • Work to expand, diversify, and maintain revenue streams
    • Assist the Chair with Board engagement in fundraising strategy and implementation.
    • Create fundraising materials as needed, in collaboration with Membership Coordinator.

Administrative Duties

Maintain efficient and effective daily operations.

    • Keep general office affairs in order.
    • Budget creation and management.
    • Liaise with bookkeeper and auditor.
    • Take in mail and file/respond/forward to appropriately.
    • Keep filing up to date.
    • Computer backups.
    • Answer all general emails. and respond to member questions and inquiries.
    • Meet with members as requested.
    • Accounts payable: receive/print invoices, write cheques, get cheques signed, send/file paperwork.
    • Do bank deposits as needed, as well as monthly Paypal deposits.
    • Attend all Board meetings (including open/close of DUO space).


Effectively inform members of relevant CADA and sector news, as well as CADA programming.

    • Coordination, creation, and delivery of CADA/East’s monthly email newsletter (in collaboration with MC).
    • Manage creation of print/promotional materials as needed, including digital ads, brochures, posters, or signage if needed (in collaboration with MC).

    • Facilitate and administer marketing initiatives (in collaboration with MC).


Build the profile and network of the organization. 

    • Attend events on behalf of CADA/East.
    • Research festivals and events that CADA/East should have a presence at, assist with the logistics and coordination of any events.
    • Creatively work with partners in the community for cross-promotion.
    • Act as primary contact for on the MOVE Steering Committee; attend meetings and conference as representative of CADA/East.

Hours of Work: This is a part-time position, comprising 15-20 hours per week. The successful candidate will be able to set a flexible work schedule. They will be expected to establish regular hours when members can contact them, and to attend Board and other meetings as they arise on evenings and weekends. Tasks with set deadlines may arise, which may require variations in hours.


  • Excellent knowledge of Toronto, Ontario, and/or Eastern Canada’s dance sector and a passion for community building.
  • Aptitude for independent work and self direction, with strong capacities for effectively navigating collaborative projects. 
  • Keen attention to detail, ability to meet deadlines and handle concurrent projects.
  • A strong track record of fulfilling commitments.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize a wide range of activities, balancing both daily operations and long term planning.
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills, and ability to engage with a variety of stakeholders, including artists and community leaders.
  • Commitment to anti-oppressive frameworks. Familiarity with anti-bias training, and familiarity with practices including harm reduction and Transformative Justice, is an asset.
  • Excellent writing skills. History of successful grant writing is an asset.
  • Strong research skills, with an ability to retrieve and efficiently organize and current information. 
  • Working knowledge of laws, regulations, and ethical principles that may be relevant to this position.
  • While this position is open to artists and other candidates seeking to enter the arts management field, 1-3 years of experience in progressive arts administration is preferred.
  • A university degree, community college diploma, or equivalent work experience is an asset.
  • Experience with data management and record-keeping is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of Mac operating system.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) as well as Google Suite apps (Sheets, Docs, Slides) is an asset.

Additional Information: The position covers the period of July 1st, 2020 through December 31st, 2021, with possibility of contract renewal. There will be a one-week vacation in December 2020, as well as a two-week vacation in Summer 2021, dates to be negotiated.
