I appreciate how the PSD changes with the times and removes hierarchy from the picture. It gives voice to professional expectations which our community needs. The subsidy programs have been huge in my life. Every single year I access my entire Training Subsidy and I’ve been using the Caregiver Subsidy Program since it came available a few years ago. What I appreciate is the flexibility for various situations that professional artists find themselves in – I use the training subsidy less for dance classes and more for Pilates and yoga classes and appreciate that these expenses are covered. When I put my kids in city camps during school breaks when I’m rehearsing or teaching, I’m able to be reimbursed for some of this cost. This is such a huge relief. The subsidies validate the time we put in as artists to maintain our physical health and juggle families with our artistic work."

| "I use the PSD ALL.THE.TIME., for all my contracts, and I submit it as a reference for the dancer fees that I pay in every one of my grants. I reference the PSD when I'm asked what my rates are as an artist and teacher, to be sure that I am charging fair, industry-standard rates. I also use the PSD regularly for the elements of contracting that fall outside of rates and fees, like conflict resolution, rights/responsibilities, and general professional best practices. Living regionally in a country as vast as Canada, the opportunity to connect as dance artists nationally is rare, but referencing the PSD gives me confidence that our practices here are aligning with others across the country, and we are united as one community of practicing dance artists." "CADA's support from day one has become an integral part of sustaining my life as a dance artist but also of supporting dance communities. Having that little extra bit of financial support helps ease the many burdens I struggle with, especially the constant need to maintain my instrument to prevent costly injuries. Decisions like what workshops or breaking events to attend are easier to make because I know that the TSP can cover part of the cost, and allows me to continually support the teachers and organizers of my dance community. The PSD is also a reference I've used many times to judge whether a contract I'm making or signing onto is fair. Before having access to the PSD, I simply compared what I did to whatever other job I was doing at the time. Definitely not ideal, and it made me ripe for exploitation. Knowing these standards also empowers me to advocate and fight for the financial rights of my peers who might not be aware of these standards. Thank you CADA!"

"The services CADA/East provides are absolutely integral to how I navigate my career as a dance artist. I consistently refer to the PSD document while setting rates and navigating contracts and it means I can do so confidently with professional support to uphold community standards. The TSP program lets me engage in valuable and ongoing professional development, which keeps me active in my practice and reaching toward new physical and creative milestones." Caitlin Griffin |
"Receiving support from the TSP gives me the confidence to continue my training and education as a professional in the dance industry in Ontario. Knowing a percentage of my training fees will be supported by the TSP allows me to attend workshops, classes, and training programs that benefit my professional development without the presence of financial stress. These experiences supported by the TSP go on to inform my own work and become investments in my own practices and professional career. I'm incredibly grateful for the guidance of CADA East's Professional Standards for Dance as a non-union, self-employed, freelance and independent contractor. I use the PSD to negotiate my rates as a professional in the dance industry. The PSD has made me more comfortable discussing and negotiating finances as an emerging/early-career professional. I have recommended the PSD resource to many emerging professionals in the dance industry, and they have in turn used it as a financial tool and guide. It was particularly helpful to refer to when I was offered my first job as a music video choreographer, and was unsure of how to approach the conversation around rates of pay with the production company. I have used the PSD to advocate for dance teacher rates of pay while working as Program Coordinator with a non-profit performing arts school, in order to appropriately compensate our teachers. I have used the PSD to negotiate rates of pay for myself as an independent choreographer in dance studios across Ontario. The PSD gives me the confidence to speak to my finances as an independent worker."
