Jillian Peever
Independent Dance Artist

Where are you from?

I am from Gravenhurst, Ontario.

What dance genres do you practice?

I work in the Contemporary Dance genre as a dancer, choreographer, and outside eye. I also teach ballet and modern dance.

Why did you join CADA-ON?

I joined CADA for the Training Subsidy Program. It is important to me to train regularly and this subsidy allows me to keep learning and stay in shape. I have also benefited from their creative workshops.

What are you reading right now?

I'm reading The Dance Current! I finally subscribed and I'm so glad I did! When I have a busy schedule like I do now, it is easy to pick up and the inspiring stories motivate!

What upcoming projects are you involved in?

My major up coming project is The Mystery of Mr. Leftovers, choreographed and directed by Sharon B. Moore. I look forward to this project as my first ever solo show, and to guide me, Peggy Baker is giving me support as a mentor in solo performance. It will also mark the debut of my new company Jillian Peever Dance Creations. Lighting will be done by Gabriel Cropley. I am also involved in work with Choreographers Angela Bumberg and Michael Greyeyes on separate projects for 2016 and 2017, as well as my own choreography in a project called The End of the Road which is an ongoing exploration of the journey through life, decision making, chaos, and balance.

Mr. Leftovers is a movement piece but there is text too. There is a strong theatrical element: how challenging has this been? As a dance artist, how has this theatrical element informed your work?

Initially, I was unsure in what approach to take when it came to delivering text, but soon I learned to take the example Sharon offered, and before long I was speaking the language of the character easily and often. I find that much of my approach to the theatrics comes from immersing myself into the character through the movement. It has been a long creation process, and since the initial creation I have had more experiences with the use of text (most recently with Fujiwara Dance Inventions' Eunoia) and I look forward to bringing this experience to the work as we approach the world premiere, February 25th, 2016
